The latest road condition statistics from the Department for Transport reveal that 72 per cent of A roads and motorways in Havering were rated “green” – meaning good condition – in 2024.
This puts Havering in the top ten for London boroughs with highest percentage of A roads and motorways rated “green”, alongside Bexley, Hillingdon and Hounslow.
However, only 53 pc of B and C roads in the borough were given a good rating last year, with 26 pc judged to be in “red” condition.

Roads with a “red” grading are in poor condition and will probably need maintenance within the next year.
Other east London boroughs including Tower Hamlets, Redbridge and Barking and Dagenham all had less than 10 pc of A roads and motorways rated “red” in 2024, with no data recorded for B and C roads.
To assess the condition of roads, the Department for Transport uses a series of parameters, including the texture, bumpiness and cracking of the road surface.
A spokesperson for Havering Council told the Recorder that the council “acknowledges the importance of road conditions to our residents”.
They said: “Despite the financial pressures the council is under, we are committed to investing approximately £6million annually in planned highway maintenance.
“Over the past three years, we have successfully resurfaced 12.95 miles of pavements and 28.9 miles of roads within the borough.”
