Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to Kennet Road just after 1pm today (April 30), after part of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee School’s roof caught fire.
Crews from North Kensington, Paddington, Kensington, West Hampstead and Hammersmith raced to the scene, where firefighters used 32-metre turntable ladders to tackle the flames.
A woman was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed the school had been safely evacuated before they arrived.
Station Commander Hardeep Dale, who led the emergency response, said: “The school was safely evacuated before our crews arrived, and we are working closely with partner agencies to support everyone affected by the incident.
“Road closures remain in place while we work to make the area safe, and we urge the public to avoid the vicinity where possible.”
The fire was brought under control by 2.41pm.
The cause is currently under investigation.
The incident comes just a day after another fire broke out less than a mile away, when an electrical transformer at a substation on Aberdeen Place caught alight at around 5.29am on Tuesday (April 29).
That blaze saw 15 fire engines and 100 firefighters respond, as flames spread to the roof of a nearby block of flats.
Around 100 residents were evacuated, with many waking up to bangs and smoke filling their homes.
A major incident was declared by the London Fire Brigade at 8.26am.
Fatima Bazzi, 71, who lives next to the substation, said: “I wake up, I smell something wrong, I go to my sitting room, and I see smoke.
“I thought my partner smoked something. I look around, I don’t see anything. I look outside, and I see a big fire.”
Her daughter Alice, 36, who cares for her, added: “It’s upsetting. It’s sad that any flat, any of my neighbours have to lose any of their belongings because of a fault that’s not their own.”
UK Power Networks later confirmed the fire had been caused by a fault in their equipment, though no power supplies were affected.
The incident was brought under control by 12.14pm.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
