Plans have been revealed for a new block at the YMCA Romford site, in Rush Green Road, as part of wider refurbishment proposals for the branch.
A Havering Council report set to be reviewed by the strategic planning committee today (October 23) details that the building is proposed to house 184 supported accommodation units across six storeys.
Shared living, dining and kitchen areas, as well as an on-site laundry room, are also planned for the development.
According to the YMCA website, a studio space for both residents and members of the public could be among the flexible uses for the ground floor space.
Although the current proposals are still at pre-application stage, YMCA floated the idea of redeveloping its Rush Green campus as early as January 2024.
The ultimate aim is for a “comprehensive regeneration” of the site, the charity’s own proposal document states, including upgrading the existing 11-storey housing block and fitness facilities.
This would follow the construction of the new building – and it is proposed for the current residents to move to this development while the tower is being refurbished.
Matt Jones, chief executive of YMCA Thames Gateway Group which Romford is part of, said the regeneration is going to take “a lot of work” and “a lot of money”, but hopes it will “strengthen our presence in the community”.

Mr Jones told the Recorder: “We need to ensure we’re providing facilities that match the quality of care and support we offer.
“As the existing Romford hostel is almost 60 years old, this is where our focus lies.
“It’s going to take a lot of work – and a lot of money – to develop the new building, but we know there’s a strong need for temporary accommodation.”
YMCA held a consultation event on the plans in September, and Mr Jones said the team is “really grateful” for the support received from councillors, the hospital trust and neighbours.
It is expected that a formal planning application will be submitted in early 2026, according to the YMCA website.
