Lammas School in Leyton, part of the Griffin Schools Trust, recently hosted composition workshops led by the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL).
The workshops introduced students to classical instruments.
One student said: “It’s amazing to hear how each instrument can tell a story.
“I’ve never thought about music like this before.”
Sarah Sawtell, head of school, said: “We believe music should be a right, not a privilege.
“Every child should have the chance to experience the joy and discipline of music.
“Our school is all about creativity, confidence, and providing opportunity.”
Lammas School says it stands out for its commitment to the arts, despite arts funding in UK schools having dropped by 42 per cent since 2010.
With support from the charity Restore The Music, every Year 7 student at Lammas now has their own instrument.
Through a partnership with Rythmico, the school also benefits from specialist tuition delivered by two teachers.
The workshops are part of a wider music strategy at Lammas School.
Lammas students are preparing to share their original compositions.
