Every year, little bookworms transform into their favourite characters, and this year was no exception—with everything from classic storybook heroes to modern icons making an appearance.
Since its launch in the UK back in 1998, World Book Day has been all about encouraging children to read for fun, giving them book vouchers to spend, and making stories more accessible for all.
Let’s be honest—half the fun is dressing up and south east London’s families did not disappoint, sharing some absolutely brilliant costumes with the News Shopper.
Here are some of our favourites from this year’s celebrations.
Danny the Dragon
This homemade dragon costume is pure genius—made from cardboard boxes and complete with fiery flames. A roaring success! (Leanne Pettyfer)
Tinkerbell and Woody
These two look like they’ve stepped straight out of a storybook. With spot-on outfits and perfect poses, they’re bringing the magic to life. (Staci Kelman)
Rupert Bear
A childhood classic done brilliantly. The red jumper and yellow checked trousers are giving us all the nostalgia. (Chelz Louise Wilkinson)
Cowgirl Barbie and the Tin Man
Cowgirl Barbie is rocking her pink box, while the Tin Man looks ready for an adventure with his trusty oil can. Loving the creativity here. (Hollie Pascoe)
The Adorable Lion
Ronny makes the cutest little lion we’ve ever seen. That mane is just too good! (Zoe Baker)
Queen of Hearts
Isasbell looks absolutely regal as the Queen of Hearts—bold, fierce, and totally in charge. Off with their heads! (Emma Davies)
It’s safe to say south east London absolutely smashed it this year. A huge well done to all the kids (and, of course, the parents who made it happen). We can’t wait to see what you all come up with next year.
Got more fab costumes to share? Drop us a picture in the comments—we’d love to see them!
