Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls has been given the School Games Gold Level Mark Award for the 2024/25 academic year.
The award scheme, launched in 2012, is run by the Youth Sport Trust and rewards schools for their commitment to developing sports competitions in the school and the community.
The school has been recognised for its work in various sports activities, including intra-house and inter-school competitions, participating in Greenwich Schools Netball, and leading Greenwich Schools Primary Cricket.
Other achievements include taking part in dance competitions, providing opportunities for sports leaders, hosting activities for less active pupils, and entering elite sporting competitions.
The school has also run an umpires and referee whistle licence programme, hosted primary netball at a local level, and seen many young people compete in local inter-school competitions.
A spokesperson for the school said: “We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders, and officials who made our competitions possible.”
As part of the application for the award, the school had to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce, and clubs.
The school spokesperson thanked the PE team for coordinating and hosting events, as well as other staff members who volunteered their time.
The spokesperson added: “Of course, our gratitude and thanks go out to our students who put in time and effort to make our sporting environment an inclusive and successful one.
“We look forward to applying once again in 2026.”
PolyMAT, the trust that oversees the school, also expressed pride in the school’s achievement.
A PolyMAT spokesperson said: “This achievement is a testament to the school’s dedication to promoting physical activity, leadership, and inclusive sporting opportunities for all students.
“With a strong focus on participation, competition, workforce development, and club engagement, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls has demonstrated excellence across all areas of the School Games criteria.
“The school’s students, staff, and sports leaders have shown outstanding commitment, energy, and teamwork throughout the year.
