Getting into central London quickly and reliably is a top priority for commuters across south east London.
So, we asked readers of the News Shopper on Facebook: “Which area in south east London has the best transport links to central London?”
One area stood out above the rest – Woolwich – with locals praising its impressive range of transport connections.
While suggestions spanned several boroughs, Woolwich came out on top thanks to its multiple high-speed options, including the Elizabeth line, DLR, and national rail services.
That combination of speed, flexibility, and convenience made it a clear favourite among readers who rely on smooth, stress-free commutes into the capital.
Tony Woodhouse summed it up: “Woolwich has the Elizabeth line, DLR and national rail.”
Alexis Barratt agreed: “Woolwich, easily.”
Scott Johnson added, “Woolwich probably,” while Gino Ginnelli also threw his vote in for the area.
Cath Broadway pointed out that both Abbey Wood and Woolwich benefit from the Elizabeth line, while Stephen Pudney said simply, “Elizabeth line is quickest.”
Joey Tee expanded: “Lizzy line starts from Greenwich borough – Abbey Wood, Woolwich – as soon as you cross the river, you’re over there.”
That mix of speed and flexibility helped Woolwich rack up six separate mentions, with Abbey Wood closely following.
Further west, Lewisham also had a strong showing.
Joe Barrett listed it as his top choice, while Volks Wagen added both Lewisham and New Cross to the conversation.
He also mentioned Greenwich, another key stop with both DLR and rail services.
Others made a case for Orpington, with Kathy Duggan noting its frequent services into London Bridge and Charing Cross, calling it a strong commuter hub.
John Stanhope gave his vote to Bromley, and Deborah Edgar-Barry suggested Erith and Barnehurst as good options, too.
Bob Norfolk-Thompson made a case for Elephant and Castle, noting its already-strong links and future potential.
He added that Lewisham could see a major upgrade: “Eventually Lewisham, when they finally sort out this long-awaited Bakerloo line extension.
“You’ll be able to escape from Lewisham, in style!”
