Havering Council has been running its winter roads service since October last year, regularly deploying gritters on nights when temperatures are predicted to fall below zero.
The borough has prepared a comprehensive winter plan, which includes gritting main routes, maintaining vehicles equipped for snow and ice, and keeping a snow plough on standby.
Councillor Ray Morgon, leader of Havering Council, said: “As temperatures drop, we know many residents are feeling the pressure of rising costs and colder homes. That’s why we’re continuing to invest in a wide range of support – from emergency financial help and food support to energy advice, warm spaces, and benefits guidance.
“Our focus is on making sure residents know help is available and can access it easily. Whether someone needs help with heating costs, staying warm, or managing their household finances, we want them to come forward and get the support they need.”

The council says it currently has four gritting lorries on standby and 2,000 tonnes of salt stored at its depot. This supply is enough to cover more than 380 miles of roads and sustain nearly three weeks of continuous snowfall.
A team is on call 24 hours a day, including weekends, to respond to weather conditions. During periods of heavy snow, priority will be given to gritting main roads, bus routes, and roads linked to motorways and hospitals.
Once those are clear, attention will shift to secondary routes to minimise disruption to other essential services, such as refuse collection.
Support for residents is available through the Havering Helps webpage. Alternatively, people can contact the council’s cost of living team by emailing costoflivingresponse@havering.gov.uk or by calling 01708 432280.
