Both Wimbledon and Mitcham police stations will remain operational after years of campaigning by Merton Labour and residents.
The threat of closure had loomed for some time, with concerns that shutting either station would weaken neighbourhood policing in the area.
Kara Abrams, a member of the Abbey Labour team, said: “It’s fantastic that it has been confirmed that both Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations will stay open.
“This is a huge victory for everyone who joined Labour’s campaign to safeguard the future of our Police Stations and keep our borough as one of the safest in London.
“Thank you to everyone who supported our campaign, this goes to show what local action can achieve.”
The campaign included petitions, council motions, visits to New Scotland Yard and direct lobbying of the Metropolitan Police and the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.
After the Metropolitan Police published its estate strategy, Councillor Ross Garrod, leader of Merton Council, wrote to the Mayor of London for formal confirmation on the future of the stations.
In response, the Mayor confirmed that both Wimbledon and Mitcham stations would remain open.
Cllr Garrod said: “Now that we have certainty that both Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations will remain open, we can redouble our focus on keeping Merton one of the safest areas in London.
“Labour-run Merton Council will continue working closely with the Police to keep our area safe.
“We’ve already upgraded and expanded our 24-hour CCTV network, and now we have deployed our new Safer Streets Team to patrol every neighbourhood, every week to crack down on anti-social behaviour.
“Together, we will keep Merton safe.”
