Nour Damascus, a shop on High Road, was found guilty of eight offences of unlawful waste disposal, with the busy road blocked with stacks of bin bags, plastic crates, raw meat and other filth.
Enforcement officers have been monitoring the business since the start of last year and even contacted the owners so that they could organise proper waste removal – but the company repeatedly ignored warnings.
As a result, it was hit with a total fine of £22,033.
It follows a fine of £4,656 last year after more than 800 packs of illegal cigarettes, tobacco and shisha products were seized from the shop.
The products did not meet the national standards and were deemed a health risk.
At the time, director Mohamad Rafat Kunbus, 39, pleaded guilty at Willesden Magistrates’ Court to supplying tobacco products not carrying the required health warnings.
Brent Council says that enforcement action has risen sharply since the launch of a ‘Don’t Mess with Brent’ campaign in May 2024, with 30$ more fines issued than the previous year.
Councillor Krupa Sheth, Cabinet Member for Public Realm and Enforcement, said: “This is a clear message – if you dump waste on our streets, you will pay the price. We have zero tolerance for fly-tipping and filthy behaviour like this. Through our Don’t Mess with Brent campaign, we’ve already handed out 30% more fines than last year, and we’re not slowing down.
“This was serious fowl play from a business that thought it could get away with it. It couldn’t. The judgement should serve as a warning to every business: dispose of your waste properly, or we’ll clean up in court.”
