The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) was informed after the chase on April 18 near Beulah Hill.
Police followed a vehicle they suspected of having cloned number plates, trying to stop it on South Norwood Street around 8.38pm.
After a brief chase, the vehicle being pursued crashed into two other member of the public’s vehicles on the A232 Wickham Road at the roundabout with Shirley Road around 8.45pm.
The driver of the vehicle being chased, a 63-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scened despite attempts to save him.
Six other people were taken to hospital, some with serious injuries and one in a life-threatening condition.
The IOPC was informed by the Met about the incident that night and investigators were sent to the scene and to post-incident procedures.
They have gathered initial accounts from the officers involved and the available body-worn video footage.
They have also spoken to the man’s family and will keep them updated as the investigation progresses.
Witnesses to the incident on a “busy” road are being asked to come forward.
IOPC director Amanda Rowe said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends and all those affected by the collision, particularly those who have been injured.
“Our role is to independently investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident and we are in the very early stages.
“This is a busy road in Croydon, and we would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward and report what they saw.”
