Ageing pumps and pipework in the main outdoor pool Park Road Leisure Centre and Lido, which have reached the end of their life cycle.
Emergency repairs are also being carried out at the same time to fix a major leak in the children’s indoor pool.
The lido, which first opened 96 years ago, closes from June 17 and is set to reopen to the public on June 27.
New circulation pumps along with pool covers being added could save £35,000 in running costs and reduce the overall carbon emissions, it is estimated.
The upgrade work is to avoid the likelihood of disruption over the summer months of July and August, Haringey Council says.
Other work includes repairs to the showers, paving slabs and the red surround of the outdoor pool.
Swimmers can still use the main indoor pool while the lido is out of action.
The work is part of a £3.6 million upgrade programme to improve energy efficiency by the council, which also includes Tottenham Green and Broadwater Farm leisure centres.
The work needed was identified when the three leisure centres were all brought back under direct council management last October.
The immediate urgency is to fix a major leak to stop 10,000 litres of water being lost every day from the children’s pool at Crouch End, which has been closed for eight weeks. It was being drained to find and repair the leak, then the tiling regrouted.
Emergency steps to reduce the loss of water and reduce maintenance and running costs are being carried out as the facilities are upgraded.
Hornsey Open Air Swimming Bath first opened in 1929. It is now one of the only outdoor pools left in north London, with Tottenham Lido having been demolished in the 1980s and Bounds Green Lido closed in 1988 and filled in to make way for a garden centre. An outdoor pool is still open at Finchley Lido during summer months.
