Whitehall Primary School, in Leytonstone, was awarded the London Dangoor Award in the schools and educational establishments category.
The school was recognised for its “innovative and dynamic approach” to curriculum design, community events, extra-curricular activities, and pupil voice.
Headteacher Zakia Khatun said: “The carefully crafted curriculum reflects the importance of connections and how inter-related everything and everybody is; it is designed to enable children to make deep connections between what is taught and how they can contribute with agency and purpose to the world they live in.”
The curriculum is structured around sustainable development goals and incorporates the skills and content of the National Curriculum.
It is enhanced with key concepts of identity and human rights, community, equality, social justice, climate, sustainability, inspirational people, and legacy.
The school hosts an annual exhibition spotlighting the sustainable development goals.
Last year’s Identity exhibition was attended by pupils, parents, community members, organisations, as well as governors, other headteachers, and council representatives.
As part of the exhibition, each year group created a large installation linked to a global goal and corresponding activities that visitors could participate in.
