Figures were released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) yesterday (July 31) and show that four of the six east London boroughs share the most popular boys and girls name.
The data was compiled using the “area of usual residence” of the mother of the baby.
Barking and Dagenham, Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest each registered Muhammad and Amelia as the most common names for babies last year.
Amelia was the joint most chosen girls name in Waltham Forest with Sophia.
According to the data, 152 babies were named Muhammad in Newham, 107 in Redbridge, 83 in Waltham Forest and 29 in Barking and Dagenham.
A total of 41 babies were named Amelia in Newham with 31 in Barking and Dagenham, 23 in Waltham Forest and 21 in Redbridge.
In Havering, Oliver was the most popular boys name with 41 babies last year and Olivia was the most recurring girls name with 32.
Tower Hamlets’ most common name for a boy was Mohammed.
A total of 145 boys were named Mohammed in Tower Hamlets last year.
Maryam was the most popular girls name in the borough with 38.
Overall across England and Wales, the top five most popular boys names of 2024 were Muhammad, Noah, Oliver, Arthur and Leo.
The top five most frequent girls names were Olivia, Amelia, Lily, Isla and Ivy.
