The old and leaky drainage system underground is said to have been damaging the surface and needs to be replaced urgently.
The closure at the junction with Wembley Hill Road runs from January 13 until mid-May.
The work is being carried out by Brent Council following discussions with Wembley traders and TfL over the best time to start — so it wouldn’t clash with the busy Christmas period or Diwali.
“Closing a busy road is not ideal,” the council’s environment cabinet member Cllr Krupa Sheth admitted. “That is why we have pushed back the start date till January.
“These upgrades are vital for the future of Wembley High Road once work is completed around the middle of May.”
The roadworks between The Triangle and Cecil Avenue are taking longer than the previous resurfacing in July because of deep digging to rebuild sections of road and replace the old drains.
But the work won’t affect buses or emergency vehicles which will still use the High Road during the closure.
