Work to install lifts and improve step-free access will begin at Wandsworth Town station in February.
The upgrade will make the south-west London station easier to use for people with reduced mobility, parents with pushchairs and travellers with luggage.
Paul McAleer, Network Rail and South Western Railway principal programme sponsor, said: “We are looking forward to starting work to improve access at Wandsworth Town station.
“This is a busy and growing station, and these improvements will make a real difference for passengers who currently face barriers using the railway.”
Network Rail and South Western Railway (SWR) will deliver the project in partnership with Wandsworth Council.
The improvements are also funded through the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Access for All scheme.
The scheme creates obstacle-free routes from station entrances to platforms.
Plans for the station include the construction of a modern second entrance at Odyssey Way, with new ticket barriers and improved access from the north of the station.
Preparatory works will begin in February, starting with the installation of hoardings and ducting.
A temporary scaffold bridge will follow in April.
Piling works to support the new lift will take place between May and November 2026, with the lift shaft installed in February 2027.
The station upgrade is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.
Wandsworth Town station will be open throughout the works, although some entrances and platforms may be temporarily closed while construction is under way.
There will be some changes to SWR services, which will be shared as the programme progresses.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “Improving access to Wandsworth Town station is hugely important for our residents and the future success of the town centre as it grows.
“By working in partnership with Network Rail, we’re pleased that these upgrade works will get underway in 2026 to improve this busy Victorian station for the benefit of the whole community.”
Wandsworth Town is the 15th busiest station on the SWR network, with more than 3.75 million passengers using it between April 2024 and March 2025.
