The incident happened in Waley Street near Duckett Street at around 4am today (March 27).
Officers were later made aware that a man was being treated in hospital after being shot in the arm.
It is believed that his injuries were later assessed as non-life threatening or non-life changing.
No arrests have been made as police enquiries continue.
A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “At around 4am on Thursday, 27 March police were made aware that a man, aged 28, was being treated in hospital for a gunshot wound to the arm.
“At this stage it is believed that he doesn’t have any life-threating or life-changing injuries.
“The incident took place on Waley Street, E1 at some point before 04:00 hrs and officers attended to search the area and complete door-to-door enquiries.
“A crime scene was put in place. No arrests have been made at this time and investigations are ongoing.
“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call 101 or post on X @MetCC quoting CAD796/27Mar.”
