Up to 200 e-bikes are expected to launch in Barking and Barking Riverside as part of a pilot programme by Swedish micromobility company Voi, having signed a memorandum of understanding with Barking and Dagenham Council.
James Bolton, general manager for the UK at Voi, said: “We’re excited to bring Voi e-bikes to Barking this September, offering residents a convenient, safe, affordable way to commute across the borough – whilst helping cut congestion and emissions.
“This pilot is another endorsement of our responsible approach to running e-bikes in London – working in close partnership with the council and the community, prioritising safety, and keeping pavements clear.”
The e-bikes will be free to unlock, with a charge of 18p per minute.
A typical five-minute ride between Upney and Barking Tube station will cost less than a pound.
Councillor Cameron Geddes, cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, said: “I’m really excited to start seeing these e-bikes around the borough, offering our residents a handy, greener way to get about in the Barking area.
“We expect these e-bikes to help ease the strain on our roads and local rail network, while giving residents a new and fun way to get to work or out to one of our parks.”
Voi will offer free rider training.
