That day in 1945 when the Second World War ended in Europe was celebrated with parties in the bomb-damaged streets of London.
Now, eight decades on, neighbours are being invited by Brent Council to apply for their street to be closed to traffic to hold a VE Day party with that famous British wartime spirit.
The council is waiving the usual fee for road closures as a patriotic gesture.
“It’s important to remember the price of peace and celebrate the unity we enjoy today,” Brent Council leader Muhammed Butt said. “That wartime generation made the ultimate sacrifice for us to have a lasting peace, something in today’s world that feels all the more at stake.”
Residents can apply by visiting the council’s website at https://brent.gov.uk by Monday, March 31, to celebrate peace in Europe in May 1945.
Bank Holiday Monday on May 5 has been earmarked for VE Day celebrations this year.
VE day itself is on Thursday, May 8.
