The proposal to restore the moat around the Grade II listed Valence House Museum was approved in July and works have been confirmed to start later this month (October).
Barking and Dagenham Council has confirmed that the space surrounding the museum is closed off and, during the time of the repairs, an area of Valence Park car park will be in use.
The estate was first mentioned in the 1250s and the moat was believed to be built around 1300.

Originally surrounding the house on all four sides, the moat would have enabled fish, ducks and geese to be bred and kept for food.
In 1936 a museum and art gallery was established in the building and two years later this became the headquarters for Dagenham Library Service.
A Barking and Dagenham Council spokesperson said: “The works’ primary objective is to generate a usable, safe and open space around the moat that can be accessed by all park users.
“Currently the space is closed off and is in a poor condition.

“The restoration works will restore the site’s natural habitat and ecology, help protect wildlife with wildflower meadow and ensure proper maintenance and care of The Holm Oak, which is over 350-years-old and one of London’s oldest trees.

“The moat will be planted with new reed beds to protect and enhance the aquatic health of the water body.
“An archaeological survey will be undertaken during the restoration works.
“No fishing is allowed at Valence House in order to protect the moat and the wildlife.”

According to planning documents submitted with the initial proposal, between the start of the works and March 2026, the railings between Valence House and the north moat will be removed as well as trees, shrubs and the redundant water pump.
There will also be an investigation into the waterlogged area and an excavation to identify the source of water/ suspected broken pipe.
Residents can keep up to date on the works by visiting the Valence House Museum website valencehousecollections.co.uk.
The council spokesperson confirmed: “Works at Valence House will be starting later this month.
“They are expected to continue until spring 2026.
“An area of the car park in Valence Park will be utilised for the duration of the works taking place.”
