The Top Gun legend’s death was confirmed by his daughter Mercedes, who told the New York Times he had died from pneumonia.
Film production company Paramount Pictures are among those paying homage to the Batman actor.
A joint Instagram post from the company, Paramount Home Entertainment and the official Top Gun social media channel said: “Remembering Val Kilmer, whose indelible cinematic mark spanned genres and generations. RIP Iceman.”

But as many have been remembering Kilmer, known for his role as Ice Man alongside Tom Cruise in the 1986 Top Gun film, fans have discovered his last social media post.

Just over a week ago, Kilmer posted a picture on Instagram of one of his latest artworks to his 642k followers.
The painting featured red and cool blue tones which Kilmer shared had “that late-night glow”.
He also wrote the caption: “It’s got that late-night glow.
“Cool tones with a low burn, like when the camp fire cools down but you’re still wide awake.
“12” x 20” plexi-glazed, signed, and ready to hang. ValKilmer.com.”
Since the news of his death made headlines this morning, fans have been paying their respects underneath his final Instagram post.
Someone said: “R.I.P. thank you for making my childhood so much fun with Real Genius, Thunderheart, The Ghost and the Darkness, and of course Top Gun and Batman.”
Another commented: “You will forever be my favourite Batman.”
“Cannot believe you’re gone… rest in peace,” a third put.
