Medics treated three people with injures in Upton Lane near Kitchener Road just after 2.50pm today (April 29).
One person was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound, while the other two were treated for head injuries.
The gunshot victim has been taken to hospital, where his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
Police arrested two people in connection with the shooting, and one of the two remains in hospital after sustaining minor injuries.
A cordon remains in place while investigations are ongoing.
Chief Inspector Daryl Jones from North East Command said: “We are aware that this shooting on a residential street this afternoon would have had an enormous impact on the local community.
“We are pleased we’ve been able to make two arrests and recover a firearm within hours of the incident.
“Any residents with concerns, please speak to the officers at the scene, or to your local neighbourhood policing teams.”
