In total, 85 individuals were celebrated during the Sanctuary Seekers Awards, held on Wednesday, December 17.
The ceremony, organised by Tower Hamlets Council, honoured those who have completed education, learning, and volunteering programmes.
Councillor Maium Talukdar, deputy mayor and cabinet member for education, youth, and lifelong learning, said: “Our Sanctuary Seekers Awards are a celebration of resilience and hope.
“Today we honour individuals who have embraced education and volunteering as pathways to a brighter future.
“Tower Hamlets remains committed to being a Borough of Sanctuary, where everyone has the chance to thrive.”
Certificates were presented by Cllr Talukdar, with cabinet member for safer communities Cllr Abu Talha Chowdhury also in attendance.
Cllr Chowdhury said: “This event reflects the strength of our community and the values we hold in Tower Hamlets – compassion, inclusion, and opportunity.
“By recognising these achievements, we send a clear message that Tower Hamlets welcomes those seeking sanctuary.”
The awards support Tower Hamlets’ commitment to inclusion and align with the Borough of Sanctuary initiative and the council’s forthcoming resettlement strategy.
Tower Hamlets Council said the awards highlight a proactive approach to enabling sanctuary seekers to thrive through education and volunteering.
The awards build on the success of the council’s Welcome Hub, which provides housing advice, ESOL classes, and digital inclusion support.
The council said these efforts reflect its commitment to building resilient communities and supporting those seeking sanctuary.
