North London – especially around Shoreditch and Marylebone – are already well represented in the pages of the gourmet bible.
Now, three more north London eateries have just been added to the Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland.
Singburi just off Shoreditch High Street, Island in Mare Street Market, King’s Cross, and Cadet in Newington Green were judged by inspectors to be worthy of inclusion.
Singburi was a cult Leytonstone no-bookings BYO Thai restaurant that made the move to Montacute Yards Shoreditch in June.
Now run by the founder’s son, along with new partners, it has evolved to take bookings and expand the menu, but still serves its signature ginger-infused chicken thighs alongside the likes of smoked tomato salad, northern raw beef larb and mussels in a Thai broth.
Inspectors said: “Sharing plates of big-flavoured, enjoyably spicy goodness are the order of the day, with top dishes on the concise menu including succulent wild ginger chicken thighs and tender smoked pork belly panang.”
Cadet is a compact wine bar and wine shop which opened in Newington Green back in 2022 and is run by wine importers Beattie and Roberts, and charcutier George Jephson.
Under the watchful eye of head chef Mike Murphy, the daily changing offer goes perfectly with the selection of wines they stock and includes a bar menu of cheeses, charcuterie and pates earlier in the week.
From Thursday to Sunday a more ambitious a la carte menu featuring what inspectors call “a treasure trove of well-priced and generously flavoured dishes.”
It currently includes the likes of venison stuffed onion with creamed chanterelles; duck liver mousse with quince jelly; skate wing with purple broccoli, crumbed oyster and hollandaise; or pot au feu of beef, rabbit & morteau sausage.
Finally Island opened in King’s Cross this summer and is a “celebration of land and sea, a surf and turf experience” by chefs Tom Brown and Brad Carter who are showcasing British produce and ingredients including organic meats and wild fish.
Tom previously ran Cornerstone in Hackney Wick and Pearly Queen in Shoreditch and Carter is the Michelin-starred chef behind Carters of Moseley.
They are now resident in the Chandelier Room at Mare Street Market serving up a menu that includes grilled shawarma prawns, piri piri chicken with crab sauce, whole John Dory with peppercorn sauce, and ribeye steak with lobster béarnaise.
Michelin Guide says its a “fun, playful restaurant on the upper floor of the King’s Cross branch of Mare Street Market. It’s a loud and lively place, where the genuine, friendly service adds to the positive atmosphere.”
