The list was curated by long-time pub writer Will Hawkes, who has spent decades visiting thousands of pubs across the country.
Each entry was chosen for its character, atmosphere, history and, of course, good beer.
Will Hawkes said: “I’ve written about pubs for more years than I care to recall, and have developed strong opinions about what makes a great one.
“Atmosphere, of course; fixtures and fittings that engender warmth, happiness and cosiness; good beer, particularly cask ale; and a sense of place.”
Among the top-ranked spots are three much-loved locals in Blackheath, Greenwich and Deptford.
Here is the list of south east London locals:
The Dacre Arms
Tucked away on Kingswood Place near the Blackheath, Lee and Lewisham borders, The Dacre Arms is a proper backstreet pub that has quietly held on to its traditional layout and feel.
Inside, it is divided into three booth-lined spaces with dark wood panelling, leaded windows and shelves filled with trinkets.
The bar is set off to the side, giving the space a calm and unhurried flow.
There is a well-kept garden out the back, accessed through tall wooden doors, and the pub serves a rotating range of cask ales across six handpumps.
While the original enamel Courage cockerel sign on the tiled frontage has been covered up, the atmosphere indoors remains rooted in its heritage.
The Pelton Arms
Located just up from the river on Pelton Road in Greenwich, The Pelton Arms combines the feel of a relaxed neighbourhood pub with a busy calendar of events.
The drinks list includes real ales, continental lagers and wine, while the food menu features home-cooked dishes and sourdough pizzas from Wandercrust.
Inside, there are fireplaces, board games and dominoes, and the large garden is ideal for warm days.
Regular quiz nights, music events and seasonal celebrations give it a lively edge without losing its down-to-earth charm.
It is a pub that manages to keep things casual while still offering plenty to keep regulars coming back.
The Dog & Bell
In an area where many pubs have vanished, The Dog & Bell in Deptford has stuck it out.
This backstreet pub near the Thames has been around in one form or another for centuries, and its current incarnation is known for real ale, straightforward food and its community feel.
There are 15 handpumps offering a wide mix of cask beers, plus rotating guest ales and a selection of bottled Belgian beers.
It also hosts a popular Pickle Festival, weekly folk music nights and Sunday quizzes.
In 2022, the pub expanded into the neighbouring flat and has since been named CAMRA Lewisham District Pub of the Year in both 2023 and 2024.
