The Star pub, with a history dating back over a century, was more recently the first pub in Plumstead to host a full Pride event.
According to local historian, Philip Windeatt, the pub originated as a smaller establishment before evolving in the 1930s, with the addition of the saloon bar and an extension.
There are rumours about the back bar being hand-built by a landlord.

The Star even has a “secret office” behind the bar, an observation post of sorts for keeping an eye on patrons and staff.
The pub’s connection to Royal Arsenal FC, now known popularly as Arsenal, is a point of interest.
It served as the changing room for the team before their first recorded match against Erith on January 14, 1887, securing a 6 – 1 victory.
The men lasted only one season on Plumstead Common pitch, as clashes arose between the military’s artillery practice and the football games.
In recent years, The Star has transformed, becoming one of the most family-friendly spots in SE18.
Inside the pub, a children’s play area is well equipped with soft play and a chalkboard.

The retro-style games room is packed with vintage machines, a pool table, and dart boards.
For foodies, there’s fresh homemade food served daily and stone-baked sourdough pizzas that have won the approval of local patrons.
An outdoor garden provides space for year-round pints, and for entertainment lovers, there are comedy nights and drag quizzes.

The Star truly offers more than just a pint.
In 2025, The Star officially became the first pub in Plumstead to host a full Pride event.
Four drag queens – Miss Aisles, Topsi, Lady Arhrodite, and Hunter Gather – took the stage along with the band Matt and the Dirty Mess.
Activities such as a cabaret show, a dog parade, and DJ sets lit up the event, which was attended by the Mayor of Greenwich and covered by Maritime Radio.
