Created by Independent Cottages, the independent accommodation experts compiled the list by comparing each market town based on several factors including the age of the town and the number of historic buildings.
Discussing the list, Independent Cottages said: “When people think of England, iconic landmarks like Stonehenge and Big Ben and traditional British delicacies like fish and chips and afternoon tea will undoubtedly spring to mind.
“But it’s the picturesque English countryside – home to rolling green hills, traditional pubs, and exceptional walking routes – that often tops the list.
@georgeinlondon SAVE for where to visit in Richmond 🍁 Head to Richmond Hill for one of London’s most iconic views. In late October, you’ll also see it beautifully covered in autumn leaves. 🦌 Richmond Park is my go-to for getting outdoors. It’s the perfect place for walks, runs, or afternoon tea at Pembroke Lodge. 🍻 Grab a pint or enjoy a Sunday roast at one of the many lovely pubs in Richmond. My favourite is The White Cross (the pub that floods). 📚 Richmond is home to one of the cutest bookshops in London, The Open Book, near Richmond Green and also Books on The Rise. 🪴 Petersham Nurseries should be on everyone’s list when visiting Richmond. It’s a boujee garden centre that also sells homeware and has a restaurant and afternoon tea greenhouse. Don’t forget to say hello to the resident cat! 🌿 If you love exploring National Trust properties, you’re in luck. Ham House is within walking distance of Richmond and is absolutely stunning. Be sure to check out the gardens and the onsite café. @National Trust 🍴 For a fancy lunch, head to Bingham Riverhouse, which boasts incredible river views and chic interiors. If you’re planning a longer trip, they also offer rooms. ☕️ With hot chocolate season approaching, stop by Knoops for an amazing selection of hot chocolates and milkshakes. @Knoops ✨ Richmond Green and the surrounding alleys should be on everyone’s list. They’re super cute, and Ted Lasso fans might recognise a few of the spots!
