Located just 90 minutes from south east London in the quaint village of Hambledon in Surrey, The Merry Harriers pub offers those looking for a staycation a cosy place to spend the night that is also dog-friendly and well-suited for exploring the great outdoors of Surrey.

The pub, run by Sam Fiddian-Green and Alex Winch, features a daily-changing menu centred on seasonal produce along with a broad drinks menu.
Its interior has undergone a restoration to turn it into a food-led destination, including hand-carved tables, chairs and a bar, and décor curated with the help of the pair’s family that reflects its 500-year heritage.

The pub is very geared up for those looking to visit with their dogs, with the restaurant being fully dog-friendly and dog beds provided in the rooms for anyone looking to stay over.
For staycations, it offers a mix of accommodation options from cosy inn rooms above the pub for historic character, to quiet and relaxed ‘Garden Rooms’ if you want some peace and quiet.

The area is well-placed for those looking to venture into parts of Surrey and Sussex, like Horsham and Petworth within a 20 minutes’ drive of the village.

Meanwhile the Garden Rooms offer more of a quiet space to unwind, with garden access if you’re planning on bringing your dog with you.
The rooms were comfortable, and although snug they felt homely. (Image: Emily Davison)

Breakfast is served in the main restaurant in the morning, with guests invited to pre-order from the menu, with options like Salmon Bagel and a classic Full English among the options on the menu.

As for the food, the pub itself has a menu that is heavily dictated by what’s in season, with options like beetroot tarte tatin and blackberry trifle on the menu currently.

Some of my favourite dishes from the menu had to be the home-reared banger with colcannon, as well as the Jamaican ginger sticky toffee pudding.
The setting is homely with candles at every table and a lively atmosphere, and on visiting it’s easy to see why this pub has risen in popularity in the months since it was revamped.
Prices for rooms at the Merry Harriers start from £130 for one guest for one night.
