As winter nears, I often find London’s entertainment options exhausted during the chilly period. So when I was invited to stay at The Club Hotel & Spa in Saint Helier, I was intrigued to see how much an island so close to the UK could offer this season.
In short, I was astounded by Jersey’s beautiful views, charming residents, excellent food, and relaxing walking routes. It’s the perfect spot for families after a short break, or couples seeking something different.
Luxury hotel experience
Jersey is fairly small, so the hotel was only a short drive from the airport. The Club prides itself in luxury, which was evident from the moment we arrived with welcoming staff and a complimentary glass of prosecco.

Our master suite included an entrance hall, super king-size bed, a large sitting room, and two bathrooms – far beyond expectations and perfectly spacious.

At roughly £297.50 a night (the same as a family room), couples may prefer a deluxe double for around £149. Prices are generally high, but you’re paying for a genuinely outstanding place to rest.

Exploring Jersey
As impressed as we were by the hotel, we set off immediately in a rental car — the best way to explore after general manager Tim Phillips gave us walking route tips to make the most of our three days.
Our first stop was St Aubin, where British and French architecture blend beautifully. Along the pier, bustling eateries beckoned, and we settled on the Gallery Café, enjoying a king prawn and chorizo pasta and a sweet potato hash. The friendly service set the tone for the weekend.

Later we walked along Ouaisné Bay, braving the cold wind to take in the scenery before the day’s highlight – the one-Michelin-star Bohemia inside The Club.

Head chef Tom Earnshaw’s eight-course tasting menu was a masterclass in presentation and flavour. Standout dishes included the red-legged partridge with red currant sauce and the daring dessert mix of ice cream, olive oil, sea salt, and caviar.

The experience was elevated by the enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff, especially with the expert wine pairings. It’s costly, but unforgettable. For a more affordable option, The Club’s other restaurant served an excellent steak that impressed me just as much as the lavish eatery the next day.

So much to do
Beyond The Club, Jersey was full of surprises. I explored the wonderfully preserved Mont Orgueil Castle, feeling transported back in time.

The island’s history – especially its role in the Second World War – is ever-present.

At La Corbière Lighthouse, the almost otherworldly landscape was dotted with former Nazi occupied bunkers, a stark reminder of its past.

And after hearing about a 20-foot statue of Lucifer at a crater called ‘The Devil’s Hole’, I had to see it and learn the story behind its eerie name.

Throughout my stay, I was captivated by Jersey’s natural beauty, intriguing history, and colourful locals – including the talkative and memorable ‘Mad Mary,’ who ran a stall along the coast.

Every corner of the island just oozed charm, but staying at The Club made it even better.

We ended our days in the luxury spa, with its indoor saltwater pool and relaxing thermal room.

Though the outdoor terrace was too cold to use, The Club proved an excellent base and a highlight of my time in Jersey.

So if you’re in need of somewhere different in the coming months, you should visit the place that might be overlooked by Londoners – but offers so much.
