Jan Lowe and her husband Sam both joined Teddington’s RNLI Lifeboat station back in 2022, where they trained to become fully fledged crew members a year later in 2023.
Now the duo has inspired their three children Anna, Tom and Dan to do the same, as they take on the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Gold Scheme Activity with the same station their parents volunteer at.
Jan said: ‘I am so proud of my three children and the way that they have embraced the RNLI and its values. It’s yellow wellies all round in the Lowe household.’
Jan is one of several mothers who volunteer at the lifeboat station, helping to keep the people of Teddington safe.
Speaking on their mother’s work, daughter Anna, aged 13, said: “Watching Mum go out whenever her pager goes off has made me think about how important the RNLI is to those who live near the river.“
17-year-old Tom described his mother as an “inspiration”, and his 17-year-old brother Dan described how the trio had “grabbed the opportunity with both hands”, after years of seeing their mother volunteer for the charity.
Matt Allchurch, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Teddington RNLI, said: ‘Mother’s Day is an opportunity to thank not only the mums who volunteer with us, but also their families. It is a privilege to welcome those families to be part of our crew.’
