Sutton: The history and meaning behind the name

Sutton as a whole was once a rural village in Surrey, but it’s evolved over the centuries into the suburban area we recognise today.

From farms and homesteads to market towns and residential suburbs, each place in Sutton tells a story of growth and change.

Sutton’s name is believed to derive from the Old English sūth, meaning “south” and tūn, meaning “farm” or “settlement,” together translating to “south farm” or “southern settlement.”

The earliest recorded mention of Sutton appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is listed as Sudtone.

For centuries, Sutton maintained its rural identity, with life revolving around farming, local markets, and community gatherings.

The development of trade and local services eventually turned it into a modest market town, providing residents with more opportunities for commerce and social interaction.

However, the most significant changes came in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway.

The new rail connections brought more people to the area, sped up suburban growth, and connected Sutton more closely with London.

By the 1950s, Sutton had combined the charm of its old village roots with the conveniences of modern suburban life.

In 1965, it officially became part of Greater London as a London Borough, relinquishing its quiet Surrey village reputation.
