Sutton Night Watch has made it to the final round of the Selco Community Heroes campaign, which celebrates organisations that provide support to communities around the country.
The charity organisation is now in the final 10 to win the prize money, which they plan to use to support people facing homelessness in the town.
Sutton Night Watch was set up more than 10 years ago with a gazebo at the back of the local railway station where volunteers served hot drinks, sandwiches and warm clothing.
They now run a fully-functioning community centre providing hot food, showers, clothing, toiletries, and life skills classes, as well as giving help to tackle food poverty.
After receiving £1,000 worth of Selco building materials in the regional voting round, the team has been busy making plans to improve the garden area, transforming it into an inclusive space for service users, staff and volunteers.
Nadine Kennedy, from the fundraising team at Sutton Night Watch, said: “We were blown away by winning the money.
“Our service users are presenting with more and more complex mental health challenges and funding for charities is becoming harder to find. This type of funding keeps our charity going.
“Winning the public vote and being awarded £10,000 would make a huge difference to our charity because the cost of food and utilities are very expensive.
“The prize money would mean a more secure future for the charity and more importantly for people we support,” added Nadine.
Simon Humpage, Head of Multi Channel Marketing at Selco Builders Warehouse, said: “We are all very inspired by the amazing work the team at Sutton Night Watch carry out to support its community.
“It’s an honour to be able to support such a meaningful initiative.”
Sutton Night Watch will compete against nine other organisations to win prizes of £10,000, £5,000 and £2,500.
The public has until December 14 to vote for their favourite community hero, and can do so on the Selco website.
The winner will be announced in January 2026.
