In July 2024, the supermarket, located at 31 High Street, closed its doors “temporarily” for what was initially described as “essential maintenance”.
In October 2024, Morrisons said it would remain closed for an “extended period” due to the discovery of significant issues.
Today (September 19), Morrisons confirmed it does not plan to reopen the existing store, citing the ‘significant structural repairs’ needed.
Instead, the supermarket plans to build a brand-new store on the site.
This comes after Morrisons undertook a comprehensive review of the site.
The supermarket chain are in discussions with other partners at the moment.
Morrisons has not yet confirmed what form the new store will take or when it might open.
A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “Over the past year, we have undertaken a comprehensive review of our Morrisons store in Sutton to ensure we can best serve the local community in the years to come.
“Given the significant structural repairs required in order for us to reopen, we are now intending to build a new store on the site.
“We are currently in discussions with potential development partners and will be exploring the viability of different options in the coming months.
“We remain committed to Sutton and to bringing forward a scheme that invigorates the high street and meets the needs of the local community.”
Luke Taylor MP welcomed the plans, saying: “I’m really pleased to see Morrisons make a commitment to build a new store on the site of their existing one in Sutton, which has been closed for over a year.
“Over that last year, constituents and local businesses made it clear to me that they wanted to see Morrisons stay on the high street – and I’m glad that this is what is happening.
“It’s a vote of confidence in our high street, and the great work we are doing to keep Sutton a thriving, bustling place to do business.
“I have heard from so many of you about getting this important store on our high street back up and running – and I’ll continue to represent your views by engaging with Morrisons as they explore the viability of different options.”
