British Asian man Sundeep Ghuman was murdered by his cellmate Stevie Hilden at the maximum security HMP Belmarsh in Thamesmead in February 2020.
An inquest heard that while Hilden was flagged on the prison system as a racist he was not assessed as high risk.
On Friday, November 7, the inquest jury concluded that had a Cell Sharing Risk Assessment (CSRA) been completed properly Sundeep’s death could have been avoided.

Sundeep, who was jailed for arson attacks in Bexley in 2011, suffered a traumatic head injury and extreme bruising across his body in Hilden’s violent attack on February 18, 2020.
A forensic consultant said the injuries he sustained were comparable to those commonly seen in road traffic collisions.

Sundeep died in hospital the following day.
Hilden, from Abbey Wood, denied murder but was found guilty by a jury in 2022 and was jailed for life with a minimum term of 17 years.
Following an inquest at Southwark Coroners Court, Assistant Coroner David Manknell KC indicated that he intends to publish a Prevention of Future Deaths report regarding the CRSA system at HMP Belmarsh.
