Newham Council’s strategic development committee is set to review proposals for new student accommodation in Stratford High Street at its meeting on Tuesday (November 11).
The committee is recommended to approve the plans, which would see the buildings at 302-312 High Street demolished and replaced by a 692-bed student accommodation block.
However, the application still has to be referred to the Greater London Authority (GLA), who will then decide whether to give the green light for the council to decide the plans itself.

A council report published ahead of the meeting reveals that 933 consultation letters were sent to neighbouring properties, but only 12 responses were received.

Of these, all but one objected to the proposals.
As well as almost 700 student rooms – spread across a part 10, part 12, and part 31-storey tower block – the development is also proposed to include shared amenity spaces.
One of these spaces is a new pub, proposed for part of both the ground and first floors of the building, to replace the now vacant venue The Builders Arms.
Planning documents reveal that other buildings currently on the site will not be reprovided, such as vacant commercial and residential units and the former West Ham Labour Party offices.
