Pub group Urban Pubs & Bars took over the lease of St John’s Tavern in Archway in September from the independent landlord.
Under the eye of longstanding former head chef Karl Ormell it had an enviable reputation for its food, with restaurant critics hailing it “remarkable” and the pub “beyond perfect.”
The pub closed on October 6 as Urban Pubs&Bars invested in the watering hole, including upgrading the garden and extending the lounge area.
When it reopens on October 31, the Tavern will also feature a refreshed design and space for around 250 customers across its bar snug, main bar, lounge, dining room, and garden.
The new owners, who run more than 60 pubs including The Gatehouse in Highgate and The Horseshoe in Hampstead, are planning a grand relaunch party on Friday November 7.
They say the refurb will polish up the pub’s Victorian character and heritage while updating the kitchen and installing comfy new furnishings and a few modern details.
St John’s Tavern dates back to 1854 and was a popular Irish drinking spot in the 1980s and 90s, hosting Irish bands and reportedly a young Courtney Love, who appeared with members of the grunge band that became Babes in Toyland.
Under the ownership of Nic Sharpe it went through a renovation in the early noughties and built a reputation for serving up some of the best gastropub fare in North London.
The new owners will be serving up a seasonal British menu complemented by craft beers and spirits, fine wines and signature cocktails.
Menu highlights include Maldon rock oysters with apple and horseradish vinegar, scallops with leek cream and bacon, and grilled sardines with Kalamata tapenade.
Heartier dishes include skate wing with caper and parsley butter, pork tomahawk with celeriac and apple slaw, Hereford beef burger with skinny fries, and a 28-day rib eye with triple cooked chips and bearnaise.
There will also be convivial sharing dishes such as cock-a-leekie pie and slow-cooked lamb shoulder, while those with a sweet tooth can enjoy desserts like burnt cheesecake with sherry and fig, sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream, and chocolate and Guinness cake with vanilla ice cream.
The new owners will continue the tradition of great Sunday roasts featuring pork, chicken, beef, and a hearty vegetarian option with all the trimmings.
Future plans include monthly supper clubs around curated seasonal menus.
Urban Pubs & Bars MD Chris Hill said: “St John’s Tavern is one of North London’s true gems, a classic Victorian pub with an incredible history and a loyal local following. Our investment ensures it remains a neighbourhood favourite while evolving into something fresh and exciting.
“With beautiful new interiors, a focus on great seasonal food, and a vibrant community feel, we can’t wait to welcome guests back this autumn.”
St John’s Tavern will be open seven days a week serving lunch, dinner, and Sunday roasts, with a launch event on Friday November 7 at 91, Junction Road, Archway.
