The incident occurred in St James Street shortly after 5.20am this morning (December 6).
Officers attended and a man in his 30s was found injured.
He has been taken to hospital where his condition remains non-life threatening, but may be life changing.
St James Street has been cordoned off between Frederick Street and Grove Road.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
There have been no arrests.
