Officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the Southend Road area just after 1am today (January 12), our sister site London Now reports.
The vehicle failed to stop police before being involved in a crash with a member of the public’s car and a street lamp.
The driver of the car – a 25-year-old man – was taken to the hospital, where he remains with potentially life-changing injuries.
He also remains under arrest on suspicion of failure to stop for police.
Two passengers in the same car were also taken to the hospital.
They have since been discharged after their injuries were not deemed to be life-changing or life-threatening.
The member of the public involved in the crash was not injured.
The incident remains under investigation, and officers remain at the scene to continue enquiries.
The road was closed with long delays today until it reopened just before 10.30am.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been made aware.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At approximately 01:05hrs on Monday, 12 January, officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the vicinity of Woodford Road, Ilford.
“The vehicle failed to stop for police before being involved in a collision with a member of the public’s car and a street lamp.
“Additional officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and the driver of the car, a 25-year-old man was taken to hospital where he remains with potentially life-changing injuries.
“He remains under arrest on suspicion of failure to stop for police.
“Two passengers of the same car were taken to hospital where their injuries were not deemed to be life-changing or life-threatening.
“They have since been discharged.
“The member of the public involved in the collision was not injured.
“The collision remains under investigation and officers remain at the scene to continue enquiries.
“The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been made aware.”
