Churchfields Junior School won the long term excellence award at Transport for London’s Travel for Life Top Schools Award.
Most pupils now walk, cycle or even scoot to the school, which is just off the A406 North Circular Road, in a programme supported by Redbridge Council.
The award was presented by Olympic medallist Victoria Ohuruogu, recognising the work to reduce car journeys.
“We have worked to discourage car drop-offs for many years,” deputy head James Easter said. “The families have helped make Churchfields a place to walk, scoot and cycle.”
The school persuades parents not to take or collect children in the family car — and has even installed enforcement cameras to stop parking or making U-turns outside the gates.
Redbridge Council cabinet member Jo Blackman said: “So many pupils are now walking, cycling or scooting to and from school, which helps make streets safer and improves air quality by the gates.”
Churchfields had 98 per cent of its pupils walking and cycling by 2024.
It has been accredited as a TfL gold standard school since 2016.
