Sourdough Sophia plans to open its latest outlet in Highgate West Hill, opposite trade friendly Swain’s Lane this spring.
Husband and wife founders Jesse Sutton-Jones and Sophia Handschuh teased the location in an announcement on their Instagram handle.
They asked followers if they could guess the spot, with a photo showing the Duke of St Albans pub in the background and also the shop’s distinctive windows.
Sophia told fans she was “super excited to announce some great news”.
“One of the reasons I’ve been so quiet is because I’ve been working really hard on getting this deal over the line, and I’m glad to say we’re finally getting there,” she said.
“I’m not gonna lie, the market has been tough recently and it’s been really hard to find affordably good sites, in good condition, in great neighbourhoods, which is why this has taken many more months than I wanted!”
The couple, who have a young child, started their micro-bakery during lockdown from their Crouch End flat after neighbours begged them for good bread.
In September 2020 the fledgling business, which started via word of mouth on WhatsApp, had exceeded its £25,000 Kickstarter target to open a bricks and mortar bakery in Middle Lane.
Last year they opened their second outlet in Essex Road, Islington.
According to their website they have won two world bread awards for their wholemeal loaf and their focaccia as well as three great taste awards for their N8 Loaf, wholemeal loaf and their house Kimchi.
The bakery will replace the Creamery ice-cream shop where Bistro Laz had a lease, which closed in September.
In the immediate area they will be competing with Trade Made, which sells sandwiches, and B-Bagel, both which opened last year, as well as national chain Gail’s Bakery, which also sells sourdough loaves and has its origins in Hampstead.
Sophia’s Instagram post said that they always wanted to open in places that they know and that resonate with them.
She wrote: “This location is a pretty special one for Jesse and myself as this was our home turf when I first moved to London before we lived in Crouch End and we spent many a weekend strolling around here and enjoying the local park and beautiful views of London in our early 20s.”
