Sanderstead is a village-like neighbourhood in south Croydon, known for its green spaces and strong community spirit.
Conservative ward councillor Yvette Hopley, who has lived in the area her entire life, what she loves most about the town.
Cllr Hopley praised its open green spaces, family-friendly atmosphere and strong residents’ groups.
She said: “We have such a wonderful community and it’s that community spirit that makes Sanderstead such a special place.”
Sanderstead is home to Purley Beeches, which is known for its woodland walks, and Wettern Tree Garden.
The garden recently received a Green Flag award and will host a ceremony late this month.
It also hosts the annual horticultural show, a highlight for residents.
Parks and woodlands, including Kings Wood, is famed for its spring bluebells, and Sanderstead Recreation Ground has sports facilities and a play area.
Community life continues at HIVE Café which was recently taken over by a local group, now offers art classes and events.
Sanderstead’s churches host a variety of activities and support services for older residents.
Sanderstead’s “village” parade remains a key part of the area, featuring an “array of important shops and new restaurants” alongside local hubs at Hamsey Green, Elmfield Way and Riddlesdown.
The councillor also highlighted the strong network of Friends groups and the Sanderstead Residents’ Association, whose biannual magazine keeps locals informed and engaged.
With good schools, transport links to London, Gatwick and the coast, and community pride at its heart, councillors say Sanderstead “really is the best place to live”.
Cllr Hopley said: “The local councillors believe that Sanderstead is most definitely the best place.
“We have such a wonderful community and it’s that community spirit that makes Sanderstead such a special place.”
