The statue, featuring Khan in a replica of his signature suit, is set to become a major new landmark in the area, celebrating the Mayor of London and his legacy.
The ambitious project comes with a hefty price tag, with a budget set at a staggering £1 billion.
Plans for this larger-than-life sculpture have been secretly in the works for the past six months, with the final decision signed off just last week.
The statue will be strategically placed in the park’s central area, making it visible from all corners of the green space and providing an ideal backdrop for photo opportunities.
A dedicated committee has been “working tirelessly” to ensure the statue is an exact replica of the mayor, with construction set to begin later this year.
Jasper PottaClean, the architect leading the committee, said: “We’ve been working around the clock to get every detail just right.
“The goal is to create a perfect likeness of the Mayor that will stand the test of time.”
While the statue is set to celebrate Mayor Khan’s leadership, there are unconfirmed rumours that the sculpture could have a subtle nod to ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) policies.
Some have speculated that the statue could depict Mr. Khan crushing a diesel car between his hands, though these rumours have yet to be officially confirmed.
If true, this would be an unexpected but fitting symbol of his stance on environmental issues and his commitment to cleaner air in London.
Discussions between Greenwich Council, Transport for London (TfL), and various stakeholders have finally concluded, and the statue’s construction is now on track.
Greenwich Park, already a popular spot for both Londoners and tourists, is expected to see an influx of visitors as the statue becomes a must-see attraction.
Trustee of the Greenwich Recreation and Artistic National Development (GRAND) committee, Claire Emissions, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential economic impact.
She added: “Greenwich Park is already a beloved destination, and we are confident that this impressive statue will attract even more visitors from around the world.
“With its unique appeal, we expect a significant boost to local tourism and businesses, generating increased revenue for the area.”
