Epping Forest District Council granted the licence to the Royal Gunpowder Mills on October 21, allowing it to host cultural and community events.
The application, submitted in September, faced two objections concerning potential public nuisance.
Essex Police reviewed the application and agreed additional safety conditions.
The licence permits the Royal Gunpowder Mills Charitable Foundation to offer regulated entertainment and serve alcohol on site.
Licensed activities include plays, film screenings, live and recorded music, and dance performances, both indoors and outdoors.
The activities will run from 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, and until 10pm on Sundays, with alcohol served from 1pm to 10.30pm Monday to Saturday, and until 9.30pm on Sundays.
The foundation’s CEO Joe Sullivan said: “Gaining a premises licence will enable the Royal Gunpowder Mills to offer bigger and better events and hires to the people of Epping Forest District and beyond, creating more opportunities for local business and for local people to engage with arts and culture through our nationally-significant historic site.”
The 170-acre site team is preparing new events for 2026.
The site’s general manager, Serena Avery, acknowledged the staff’s appreciation of their extremely supportive neighbours and the hope that good relationships will continue into the future.
