Havering Council has begun early engagement on the project, with a stakeholder design workshop held on Monday, July 14.
This follows the Romford Town Centre Masterplan in March 2025, which aims to revitalise the Market Place as both a central space for Romford Market and a lively public area for the wider town centre.
Councillor Graham Williamson, cabinet lead for development and regeneration, said: “We have said all along that we will look to revitalise Romford Market Place.
“This meeting is the next crucial part of the process where we will look at how we can preserve our town’s heritage while creating a dynamic and welcoming space for all residents and visitors.
“We look forward to making the promise a reality, working together with others to bring this vision to life.”
The council remains in the early planning stages, with no fixed design proposals in place.
Attendees at the workshop included ward councillors, market traders, and representatives from the Greater London Authority, Transport for London, Historic England, the Metropolitan Police, Romford Business Improvement District, and neighbouring shopping centres.
The session also included input from St Edward’s Church, as well as charity and volunteer groups.
Discussions also explored how the community infrastructure levy (CIL) could help fund the project.
CIL is a financial charge on new developments, designed to support infrastructure improvements in the area.
The feedback gathered from the workshop will help inform more detailed design proposals, which are expected to be developed by autumn.
A public consultation will follow, giving residents and businesses the opportunity to share their views before final plans are agreed.
