The Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps – a youth band open to those aged eight and over – has been chosen to perform at celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American Independence next July in Philadelphia.
They are reportedly the only UK band to be invited to the events, which include taking part in America’s longest running 4th of July parade and competing in the World Association of Marching Show Bands concert and display competitions.
Samantha Barrand, band director, called the invitation a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity and said members were “absolutely buzzing” when they found out.

She told the Recorder: “There’s a lot of excitement about it from both the staff and also the children themselves and their families.
“It’s a massive deal for us and I’m very, very proud that we’ve been selected to go and represent England.
“I’ve got no doubt that when we actually get on that plane and we’re there the kids are going to be overwhelmed and wowed and everything that goes along with it at the same time.
“But that sense of pride will definitely be one of those top feelings.

“It’ll be something they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
The band was established in 1957 and has a history of prestigious performances, including the Lord Mayor’s Shows and London’s New Year’s Day Parade.
But, unlike some events where they are hired to perform, this will not be a funded trip, Samantha explained.
She said that the 55 band members who are joining the trip, and the band itself, are covering some of the costs, but that a “massive fundraising effort” is underway to raise the rest of the money.

So far, the band has raised around £15,000 out of the £40,000 needed, through events such as a fun days and concerts.
Samantha said: “We’ve spoken as staff and we’re going to make this happen.
“There’s actually a lot of the kids that have never even been out of the country.
“Some of them have never been away from home for more than a couple of days on a band show.
“So it’s a really, really big deal.”
