River Island is set to shut 33 shops across the UK before the end of January 2026 – including its store at Gallions Reach Shopping Park in Beckton.
The move is part of a restructuring plan announced in August, which aims to prevent River Island from collapsing into administration.
A specific closing date has not been confirmed for any of the 33 stores shutting down.
Alongside the closures, the clothes retailer will also pay a reduced rent at a further 71 shops.
River Island chief executive Ben Lewis said: “River Island is a much-loved retailer, with a decades-long history on the British high street.
“However, the well-documented migration of shoppers from the high street to online has left the business with a large portfolio of stores that is no longer aligned to our customers’ needs.
“The sharp rise in the cost of doing business over the last few years has only added to the financial burden.”
Only one other London store faces closure in January: the River Island at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre in Rotherhithe, south east London.
River Island currently has more than 220 stores across the UK and Ireland and employs around 5,500 people.
