On October 6, Harish Suresh, owner of Rishi’s in Slate & Grain in Hackbridge, was named the Surrey Chef of the Year and the National Chef of the Year.
The Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA) celebrate the best of South Asian cuisine across the UK, recognising restaurants and takeaways for excellence in food quality, service, and contribution to their local communities.
Rishi said: “I didn’t expect to win, to be honest.
“I was at the table, having some food, and then they called my name during the main course.
“I was on my way to pick up some naan, then somebody called my name, and I realised ‘Wow, I need to go up now.’
“It was perfect timing, and I quickly went up.”
Rishi’s in Slate & Grain is situated inside Button House, a retirement village on Spinning Wheel Way.
Since opening in November 2023, the restaurant has struggled with its location being tucked away inside.
Rishi added: “Winning both these awards means a lot to us.
“We’re not located on the high street; we’re inside a retirement living complex, so visibility is quite limited.
“Not many people know we’re here.
“But more locals have started to discover us.
“We’re beginning to see people coming in gradually, and it’s really encouraging.”
Rishi said authenticity and fresh ingredients are at the heart of his cooking.
“We’re very passionate about food and use only fresh ingredients, like fresh masala and fresh vegetables.
“It makes such a difference in flavour.
“We never compromise on quality or portion size and people always leave full and still want more the next day.”
He added that the awards have already started to boost interest in the restaurant, with more bookings and events coming in.
“Winning both these awards means a lot to us. It shows people are recognising what we do.
“We’re grateful to the local community for supporting us.
“They come here for family meals and parties, and that means everything.”
Rishi’s team celebrated the win with family and staff, and Button House residents have been proudly sharing the news.
He added: “It’s an amazing feeling. We’re a small team, but this recognition gives us such a big boost.”
Rishi plans to launch a new menu later this year, inspired by the dishes that earned him the national title, which includes a blend of traditional South Indian flavours with his own creative twists.
ARTA Founder Mohammed Munim said at the awards this year: “Heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and finalists of ARTA 2025 – the outstanding Pan Asian restaurants, takeaways, and chefs who continue to set the benchmark for excellence in the UK’s hospitality scene.
“As the leading awards celebrating the best of the UK’s Asian restaurant and takeaway sector, we recognise your dedication and passion, which bring extraordinary flavours and experiences to diners nationwide, even amidst challenges.
“I would also like to sincerely thank all the distinguished guests who have joined us this evening to honour this incredible community.

“ARTA 2025 honours you – the trailblazers, the innovators, and the champions – for your lasting contribution to our vibrant culinary landscape.
“Despite the ongoing challenges faced by the sector – from rising costs and labour shortages to recent changes in immigration rules affecting skilled chef recruitment – we continue to celebrate the resilience, creativity, and excellence of the Pan Asian restaurant and takeaway community.
“Your commitment ensures that the flavours, traditions, and innovation that define this industry continue to thrive across the UK.
“Together, we not only serve food but also preserve a vital part of Britain’s multicultural heritage, inspiring diners and future chefs alike.
“Tonight, we celebrate you – the heart and soul of our culinary journey.”
