25 fire engines and around 150 firefighters tackled the fire at the historic cinema building in Richmond Road today (March 16).
The brigade was called at 2.24pm and crews from Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Twickenham, and Richmond attended the scene.
The entire Grade II listed building was affected by the fire. There are no reports of any injuries.
The fire was under control at 6.04pm. It is not known how the fire began, and an investigation has been launched.
Station Commander Will Thompson, who was at the scene, said: “Our crews worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.
“Road closures remain in place, and we urge people to avoid the area to minimise disruption.
“The fire produced thick smoke, so we advised local residents to keep their windows and doors closed.
“Two of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders were deployed as water towers and for observation, giving incident commanders an aerial view to enhance situational awareness and support tactical decisions.”
