The London Ambulance Service was called to a person who had fallen on the tracks at Purley railway station at around 9.30am yesterday (December 12).
Paramedics treated a woman at the scene and took her to hospital where her condition is not yet known.
It is understood from the train operator that the woman lost her footing before falling into the gap.
A passenger added that the station was later evacuated as it was closed due to the incident.
The passenger, who did not give their name, said: “I was on the Thameslink train to Bedford.
“The train came to a standstill at around 9.40am at Purley station.
“After a while there was an announcement to say there was an ongoing issue on the platform – someone had fallen between the train and platform edge.
“We were advised to go to another platform for another train, we did, boarded, waited a while as we were waiting for the end of the train to join on.
“After about 15 minutes or so they then decided to close the whole station so we had to evacuate.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.29am yesterday (12 December) to reports of a person who had fallen on the tracks at Purley Rail Station, CR8.
