The retailer closed its Kentish Town branch in February 2024, despite a 2,000-strong petition from loyal shoppers desperate to keep it open.
But the budget supermarket chain said the 8,000 square foot store was “no longer fit for purpose” and it was seeking alternative locations in the area.
Two months after Lidl rolled down its shutters, the site was taken over by the Mighty Pound shop.
And last summer it was again advertised for let, with the listing boasting that the “premises occupies a prominent position on Kentish Town Road between the junctions of Prince of Wales Road and Anglers Lane”.
There were hopes among residents that another bargain supermarket Aldi might move in, but Pure Gym has now applied to Camden Council to change the signage at the site.
The UK’s largest gym chain already has a branch in Kentish Town at Highgate Studios in Highgate Road.
The application, dated July 16, applies to change the signage at 217-223 Kentish Town Road with an illuminated fascia, window graphics, and a hanging sign.
The fast expanding health club chain is known for providing affordable, flexible “no-frills” gym memberships and has more than 400 sites in the UK.
